The Federation of Disabled People has many wonderful volunteering opportunities from helping in our advice centre to working on reception at Shopmobility, reviewing restaurants and cafes for our Accessible City Guide or making a real difference to local issues through our Get Involved! Project and all within a vibrant and friendly staff and volunteer team across three sites within Brighton & Hove.
The Federations volunteering opportunities can equip you with, computer skills, customer service training, involvement in community groups and meetings and you can even gain NVQ qualifications, all in a fun and friendly environment. Whatever your interests there are opportunities for everyone!
The Federation is always on the look out for people who have skills and experience they can share. Do you have competent IT Skills? Are you a people person? Would you like to work within a team? Contribute towards decisions regarding planning & access within Brighton & Hove and much more!
The Federation offers all volunteers inductions, training and social events throughout the year. The Federation of Disabled People welcomes interest from disabled and non disabled people. The three sites are all on ground level and are fully accessible. The Federation will make any adjustments necessary to create an accessible environment for all its staff and volunteers.

Volunteer Pack

Payroll- We provide a comprehensive payroll service to small employers. We will correspond with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on your behalf, take care of necessary paperwork and keep you informed on any changes that may affect your employer responsibilities.
Supported Bank Acccounts- We help people using Direct Payments to manage their own care arrangements by providing a range of services which are tailored to the individual requirements of each client.
Disability Advice Centre
To provide a frontline advisory service to customers by answering the telephone and dealing with customers face-to-face who use the Disability Advice Centre. To give advice and information on a range of disability matters and to signpost people to more specialised agencies when appropriate.
Disability Advice Centre: Benefits Advice Service
To give advice and information on a range of benefits matters and to signpost people to more specialised agencies when appropriate. To provide clients with help with form filling (particularly Disability Living Allowance DLA)
The Accessible City Guide is the Federation’s on-line access information guide to Brighton & Hove, providing information on local venues, facilities, tourist attractions, events and festivals around accessibility. We’re looking for volunteers to review these and give their opinions for our Guide.
Shopmobility
To provide a frontline reception service to customers by answering the telephone and dealing with customers face-to-face who use the Shopmobility service. To demonstrate excellent communication skills, show commitment to the service and be reliable. Need to be consciencious and considerate to the needs of the customer without prejudice.
Shopmobility Delivery & Maintenance Volunteer
To provide a frontline service to customers by preparing, delivering anf collecting mobility equipment to accessible hotels within Brighton & Hove and other popular landmarks within Brighton. The role requires excellent customer service and communication skills as volunteers will be dealing with customers face-to-face.
To represent the needs and interests of disabled people and groups within Brighton & Hove and to develop more equal and inclusive public services. This project seeks to represent the views, experiences and opinions of disabled people, carers and thos impacted by disability to provide disability expertise on various influential local working groups and forums.
To monitor and moderate activity on The Federation of Disabled People’s online discussion forum and to ensure it remains a fair, safe and equal environment for all. This includes promoting both the vision of The Federation of Disabled People and to uphold forum rules, as well as editing posts for unnecessary, offensive or irrelevant content, ‘locking’ topics, highlighting important announcements and other general forum housekeeping duties.
News Page Editor
This opportunity is based at the volunteer's home if they wish, or at our offices. For example, the volunteer could, if it suited them, do a lot of the research and writing from home, coming into the main office to update the news page on the website and work within the friendly staff team. Firstly, the news page will be the main source of information for what is happening internally within the federation. Secondly, the news page will highlight local and national news stories of relevance to the federation's work, including disability policy issues and local development projects.
While seeking to inform, the news page will also act as a forum to inspire and motivate disabled people.

The Board of Trustees meet quarterly, in addition there is the AGM and it is also helpful to the organisation if the trustees are able to attend and support other events connected to the Federation.
Counselling Placements
The Federation of Disabled People offers Counselling placements to trainee counsellors to work within our counselling service. The minimum qualification must be a student who is in their second year of a diploma course in counselling.
