Volunteer Opportunities

 

Ever thought about volunteering?

The Fed Centre for Independent Living has many wonderful volunteering opportunities from helping in our advice centre to working on reception at Shopmobility, reviewing restaurants and cafes for our Accessible City Guide or making a difference to local issues through our Get Involved Project and all within a vibrant and friendly staff and volunteer team in Brighton and Hove.


The Fed's volunteering opportunities can equip you with, computer skills, customer service training, involvement in community groups and meetings and you can even gain NVQ qualifications, all in a fun and friendly environment. Whatever your interests there are opportunities for everyone!


The Federation is always on the look out for people who have skills and experience they can share. Do you have competent IT Skills? Are you a people person? Would you like to work within a team? Contribute towards decisions regarding planning and access within Brighton and Hove and much more!


The Fed offers all volunteers inductions, training and social events throughout the year. The Fed Centre for Independent Living welcomes interest from disabled and non disabled people. Our sites are all on ground level and are fully accessible. The Fed will make any adjustments necessary to create an accessible environment for all its staff and volunteers.

Administration Assistant

The Brighton and Hove Federation of Disabled People runs a Direct Payments Support Service (DPSS).  Direct Payments allow people to plan and manage their own support rather than rely on other people or existing services that may not suit them.  People receive an allowance from the Council with which they can buy services, or employ their own staff to support them in everyday life.

 This service requires an administrator to support the team of advisors in their work.


Receptionist

To demonstrate excellent communication skills, show commitment to the service and be reliable. Need to be efficient, organised and empathetic to the needs of the service user without prejudice. Disability Advice Centre


To provide a frontline advisory service to customers by answering the telephone and dealing with customers face-to-face who use the Disability Advice Centre. To give advice and information on a range of disability matters and to signpost people to more specialised agencies when appropriate.

The Disability Advice Centre actively supports the involvement of a diverse range of Volunteers in its service delivery. Many of the Team of 10 in our Information, Advice and Benefits Service live with a disability or long-term health condition, and their commitment enables callers to readily speak to, or drop in and see, an Adviser at anytime 10-4, Mondays to Fridays - for general level advice on any disability-related issue.
Training, support and guidance are always provided to Volunteer Advisers.



Disability Advice Centre: Benefits Advice Service

To give advice and information on a range of benefits matters and to signpost people to more specialised agencies when appropriate. To provide clients with help with form filling (particularly Disability Living Allowance DLA)



Accessible City Guide

The Accessible City Guide is the Fed’s on-line access information guide to Brighton and Hove, providing information on local venues, facilities, tourist attractions, events and festivals around accessibility. We’re looking for volunteers to review these and give their opinions for our Guide.



Shopmobility


To provide a frontline reception service to customers by answering the telephone and dealing with customers face-to-face who use the Shopmobility service. To demonstrate excellent communication skills, show commitment to the service and be reliable. Need to be consciencious and considerate to the needs of the customer without prejudice.



Shopmobility Delivery Collections Volunteer

To provide a frontline service to customers by preparing, delivering and collecting mobility equipment to accessible hotels within Brighton and Hove and other popular landmarks within Brighton. The role requires excellent customer service and communication skills as volunteers will be dealing with customers face-to-face.



Payroll and Administration

Payroll- We provide a comprehensive payroll service to small employers. We will correspond with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on your behalf, take care of necessary paperwork and keep you informed on any changes that may affect your employer responsibilities.

Supported Bank Acccounts- We help people using Direct Payments to manage their own care arrangements by providing a range of services which are tailored to the individual requirements of each client.



Get Involved!

To represent the needs and interests of disabled people and groups within Brighton and Hove and to develop more equal and inclusive public services. This project seeks to represent the views, experiences and opinions of disabled people, carers and thos impacted by disability to provide disability expertise on various influential local working groups and forums.



Trustee Pack


The information in the Trustee pack above should help you to get an idea of the work we do, and whether you feel your knowledge, skills and experience are relevant to this post.
The Board of Trustees meet quarterly, in addition there is the AGM and it is also helpful to the organisation if the trustees are able to attend and support other events connected to the Federation.



Counselling Placements


The Federation of Disabled People offers Counselling placements to trainee counsellors to work within our counselling service. The minimum qualification must be a student who is in their second year of a diploma course in counselling.
