terre a terre, vegetarian restaurant

Terre a terre serves the ultimate in vegetarian cuisine and has won many awards.  It's a delightful little restaurant but there are some issues with access.

Access information:

  • Level access
  • The "accessible" toilet is very small and may not be suitable for larger wheelchairs and scooters

  • Address: 71, East Street
    Brighton
    BN1 1HQ

  • Phone: 01273 729051
  • Web: www.terreaterre.co.uk
  • Opening Times: Monday closed
    Tuesday - Friday 12noon - 10.30pm Saturday 12 noon - 11pm
    Sunday 12noon - 9pm

  • Getting There / Parking: terre a terre is in East Street in Brighton, on the edge of the Lanes, and not far from the sea front. Many bus routes stop 5 minutes away in The Old Steine and North Street. The restaurant is also very near Pool Valley coach station.

There is definitely no parking, and as it's a narrow, busy street setting down could be tricky but is possible. There are some disabled bays in the area. The Lanes car park, with its entrance in Black Lion Street, is 5 minutes away.

  • Getting In: There is one door to enter the restaurant. It opens outwards and is heavy, but there is a bell to ring, and when I visited assistance came very quickly.
  • Getting Around / Facilities: The eating areas are spacious, and very attractive. There is one immediately inside the door, and a larger one further back, accessible up a ramp which is quite steep but I didn't find it difficult in my power chair. Moving around and getting seated was fairly easy, and staff are willing to move furniture to enable you to sit where you'd like. At the rear is a small patio. It has a step, but a ramp can be provided on request.

The toilet is what I would call semi-accessible. A small ramp takes you to the door which needs a right-angled turn to get in. The space is long and narrow, and wasn't wide enough to turn my average sized power chair in. If you can manage without having to turn, you'd be OK. If you need to be alongside the loo to transfer, it wouldn't be possible. Terre a terre have plans for a replacement accessible toilet for the future.

There is a large print menu available on request which looked very clear, and ran to several pages.

  • Additional Comments: Terre a terre serves the ultimate in vegetarian cuisine and has won many awards. It is a bit out of my price bracket, but there is a special 3 course menu and a wine and tapas offer both available during the week which might tempt me. (I have to say that I was given some complimentary delicious treacle tart and ice-cream, and fresh orange juice, so was very happy!)

There are vegan, raw food and gluten free options indicated on the menu, and staff are well equipped to provide dietary information. Special allergies can be catered for given some notice.

There are some takeaway meals and various goodies to go. If you have babies or children you're well catered for with toys, free baby food and nappies.
