Young People's Centre

This is a very old building with difficulties to overcome, but has been made homely and welcoming.  Poor streets nearby can make it a challenge to get into.

Access information:

  • There is a single small step in the doorway
  • There is a good-sized accessible toilet
  • Venue Description: The Young People's Centre is a free space for young people, a safe haven to go and relax, chat, meet people and use the internet. It provides support and help for young people.

    Brighton
    BN1 1AE

  • Phone: 01273 887886
    Confidential Counselling Line: 01273 711633

  • Opening Times: Ring for opening times.
  • Getting There / Parking: The Centre is in Ship Street, near to The Lanes, and just up from the sea front. The nearest buses are in North Street, not very close. This is a very difficult area for parking. There are some disabled parking spaces further north in Ship Street, and an NCP car park in Black Lion Street.
  • Getting In: The most difficult part of getting in concerns the pavement outside, which is not the responsibility of the Centre. The combination of a narrow pavement, sloping and uneven and obstructed by the steps of another building between the only dropped kerb and the Centre meant that I had to ask for help from a passer-by.

The doorway has a small step with a little drop beyond it. As it was a wet day I found the metal surface a bit slippery, but there is a ramp available. There is an entry-phone which is a bit high up for wheelchair users to read, but it is planned to put up a notice lower down telling people to ring the bottom bell.

  • Getting Around / Facilities: The hallways and entrances to rooms are manageable. Some reflective strips have been used to help visually impaired people. From one room you can reach a patio with the help of a ramp.

There is a kitchen which I could enter part of but not get as far as the cooker etc. There are plans to improve this.

A room on a higher level is accessible by a rather steep ramp, help would be needed. This room and the patio can also be used for eating.

There are more rooms upstairs, but all the available services can be offered downstairs.

    Facilities
There is an excellent newly finished accessible toilet, with space on the right for transferring

  • Additional Comments: This is a very old building with difficulties to overcome, but has been made homely and welcoming. Further improvements depend on money being available.
