  • Getting There / Parking: Brighton Deaf Centre is located at the junction of Carlton Hill and St John's place.

Carlton Hill is partially closed from 15th October 2010 to 31st December 2011
due to the American Express Development. To access the centre you need to go up Edward Street and turn up White street.

There is a small car park with space for 4-5 cars behind the centre, however it is quite steep to get into. There are also pay-and-display spaces on Calton Hill and White Street, with free parking for blue badge holders. Taxis can drop off in any of the surrounding streets but there is no designated area.

The nearest bus stops are about 250 yards away, with nearby stops at Queens Park Road, Egremont Place and Devonshire place.

  • Getting In: Carlton Hill is quite steep at points, and most of the streets nearby are very steep at the sides (i.e. the roads are cambered). I found it quite difficult to get round and it would pose a considerable challenge for a self-propelled wheelchair user. If the road is busy and you cannot park in the nearest pay-and-display, it could be quite a walk to the centre.

Once at the building, the front entrance has a gate leading to 10 steps, with handrail, up to the entrance. There is an accessible entrance to the side, with a path which takes you to the front door. The path is a little uneven but wide enough for a wheelchair.

There are double doors at the entrance, with a doorbell which is a bit of a stretch from a wheelchair. It is recommended to call ahead if you are visiting.

  • Getting Around / Facilities: Once inside it is fairly easy to get around. The main hall is quite large and on one level, with a raised stage (three steps). There are a range of tables and chairs which can be set up as required. The fire exits have a single step.

There is an accessible toilet on the right-hand side as you enter the building. It is a fairly standard size.

You can also access the offices and kitchen reasonably easily although there is not much space to move around once inside. The kitchen work surfaces are quite low but not enough space to get a wheelchair under.

  • Additional Comments: Staff were very friendly and helpful and eager to hear how they can better meet people's needs in regards to access.

The Association offers services throughout Sussex with Brighton being the Headquarters. We have drop-in days for help and advice at various venues in Sussex. The help given includes employment, benefits, pensions, education and home and hospital visits.

The Association also provides facilities for Social Clubs and activities in several venues in Sussex. The facilities include, youth group, senior citizens clubs, activity club and sports and social clubs.

Housebound Deaf people are visited to relieve the isolation and, where possible, transported to the various clubs to meet friends and communication in their own language.

Deaf Awareness training is offered to raise the general public’s knowledge of the needs of Deaf people and help improve the access available to them

An Advocacy service has recently been set up to empower Deaf people to speak up for themselves and take control of their own lives.
