Nivea Sun Yellowave Beach Sports Venue and Barefoot Cafe

Nivea Sun Yellowave Beach Sports Venue and Barefoot Cafe
Sports Venue offers on a sandy pitch:  Volleyball, Beach Soccer, Beach Rugby (non contact!), Beachmington and a Climbing Wall.  The usual set up of the courts is for volleyball, others on request.  Climbing wall always available.  They are classed as an Olympic training ground for volleyball!

Cafe is open to everyone, it is not restricted to those booking the sports facilities.
  • Venue Description: All sporting activities are outside and there is a large cafe seating area outside on the deck. The atmosphere is very calm and relaxing and is still apparently so even at the weekend when they can be very busy and it becomes a hive of activity! At night there are flood lights and the inner deck area has full lighting too. (The arches on Madeira Drive are also lit – so no dark areas when leaving!)

Summer Opening times: 10am to 10pm Monday to Friday

10am to 8pm Saturday and Sunday

  • Getting There / Parking: Location is on Madeira Drive just opposite the Madeira Drive lift and just down from the halfway station of the Volks Train.

Plenty of parking in Madeira Drive and some disabled spaces just outside the cafe.

The facilities are situated just over from the Madeira Drive lift so the bus route for the 27 and 12 is accessible from Marine Parade. The lift is attended, large enough for a couple of wheelchairs and is open from Easter to the end of September. Bus access when the lift is not open would need to be down Dukes Mound.

  • Getting In: Madeira Drive is totally flat and very wheelchair accessible (we walked from the pier).

To access the venues you have to cross the Volks Train line. There is a good ramp but the railway is protected by gates which do not have automatic opening so could be difficult for wheelchair users on their own as the gate opens outwards. It could also be challenging for visually impaired people as you have to walk across the railway line and there are no “verbal” indications of when a train may be coming, although they are slow and so always sound their horns. The staff at the venues are always willing to help and if you advise them of your approximate time of arrival they will be happy to look out for you and help you across.

  • Getting Around / Facilities: The access is then level and the staff are more than willing to move any tables and chairs around either on the deck area or inside the cafe to facilitate your requirements. For anyone with visual impairments the staff are available to read the menu and help with seating etcetera. The serving counter in the cafe is low level so ideal for wheelchair users.

Menus are available but not in Braille or large print. All staff are pleased to help with reading, ordering etcetera at any time. The menu is healthy and at everyday prices.
There are changing and toilet facilities specifically for those with physical disabilities with adequate space for a wheelchair and low level shower with seat. Toilet has grab rails and there are baby changing facilities in the toilet too. The general changing room would also accommodate a wheelchair but there is no seat in the shower.

The venue is happy for the sports facilities to be used by anyone and will facilitate changes where possible. The playing area is sand so not suitable for wheelchairs or crutches, but the nets can be lowered right down for those who would find the right volleyball height too high. The venues have happily had groups of people with hearing difficulties and learning disabilities use the facilities.

Everything is on one level and all areas (except the sand areas) can be accessed by a wheelchair. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet, changing area and low level shower with shower seat. The other changing areas could easily be used by non wheelchair users.

  • Additional Comments: The staff are all very helpful, friendly and polite and are there to ensure your visit is a pleasant experience – just ask for any help you need.

This is definitely a place I shall be visiting regularly – the staff made me feel really welcome and the atmosphere was relaxed.
