  • Getting There / Parking: The Leisure Centre is located on Kingsway (A259 coast road) approximately 7 miles east of Worthing and 2 miles west of Brighton.

The centre is served by buses: STAGECOACH 700 & 702 Buses number 1, 6, 20 and 49 also stop nearby.

Hove station is only a short walk from the centre with trains arriving from London Victoria, Haywards Heath, Worthing, Bognor Regis and Portsmouth.

There are disabled parking bays behind the leisure centre on Hove Street South. (This is the road directly across from Hove Street on the otherside of Kingsway). There is also street parking or a "Pay & Display" carpark adjacent to the Centre. There are steps to get out of the main carpark.

  • Getting In: To get into the Leisure Centre from the disabled parking bays, follow the ramps which lead to the back of the centre.

Ring on the buzzer and reception will let you in. You will enter the centre through the swimming pool changing rooms and you need to go upstairs in the lift to pay. Alternatively, when you buzz to be let in ask for a member of staff to come down to meet you and take your money -they're very helpful!

The main leisure centre entrance on Kingsway is also completely accessible.

  • Getting Around / Facilities: The whole of the leisure centre is completely accessible to people in wheelchairs. The upstairs therapy rooms can be reached by lift, but the lift is too small for a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Therefore, if you wish to book a therapy session (massage, physio etc) then please request a lower level room when making your booking.

The majority of the leisure centre is well lit and clearly signed.
Automatic sliding door with a intercom at the back entrance.

  • Accommodation / Rooms: SWIMMING POOL:
The changing rooms are spacious with no steps. There is a radar key accessible toilet and a radar key adapted accessible changing room with a shower, bench and grab rails. There are several large 'family' changing rooms with space and benches. Many of the smaller changing rooms also have benches.

The main swimming pool has sloped entry and there are two water-wheelchairs available. There is a bridge over the pool as you enter the main swimming area and most people have to duck underneath it.

The children's swimming pool (swimming lessons etc) has steps and there is not currently a hoist. However, there is a sloped entrance into the fun, shallow 'lagoon' area of the main pool.

The floor is extremely slippery in the changing rooms and pool-side.

SPORTS HALL / GYM / FUNCTION ROOM
There are basic changing rooms for these facilities but not any specifically accessible changing rooms or showers. However all changing rooms have benches. The mirrors in these changing rooms are at standing height.

  • Additional Comments: Swimming Clubs for people with disabilities run on Tuesday mornings, Thursday mornings and Sunday evenings. Contact the centre for further information.

Staff are extremely helpful and I got the impression that they would happily assist anyone with any form of disability or need. The King Alfred is a very basic leisure centre - not in any way 'glamorous'. There is not currently a cafe. But the staff are very nice and it's a good place to get some exercise!
