The FED Celebrates the International Day of Disabled Persons 2009 with a Successful Event at Brighton Dome

Brighton & Hove celebrated the day this year with our event held at the Dome on Thursday 3 December 2009. More people than ever attended this year and were treated to an afternoon and evening filled with a variety of activities and entertainment.

After some inspirational speeches from disabled people including artist Caroline Cardus, who makes work about hers and other people’s experience of disability and local writer Penny Pepper, there was an opportunity to take part in workshops. These were held by the Federation’s Get Involved! and Equality Coalition’s projects and addressed how to get involved in improving local services in the City. Films were also shown by local disability groups including Oska Bright the Brighton award winning short film festival that is managed by people with learning disabilities.

There were complimentary massages available in the quiet area and the chance to have a go at the WII Fit organised by the Council’s Sport’s Development team.

The day was rounded up with entertainment including some hilarious stand up from well known comedians Mat Fraser and Liz Carr.

The Federation’s Chief Officer, Geraldine DesMoulins, said:

“It was a great opportunity for disabled people and non-disabled people to get together to celebrate and enjoy this day”.
