Counselling
The Federation of Disabled People offers placements to trainee counsellors to work within our counselling service. The minimum qualification must be a student who is in their second year of a diploma course in counselling.
We run a daytime counselling service, Monday to Friday within office hours. All counselling is done in house at the address below.
Counsellors are given weekly supervision either on a Monday from 2:00 - 3:30pm or a Thursday from 4:30 - 6pm.
" The task of counselling is to give the client an opportunity to explore, discover and clarify ways of living more resourcefully and toward greater well-being"
The Federation's Counselling Service is open to disabled people, their families, friends and carers.
When you apply for counselling you will be invited to attend a free 50 minute assessment session at our premises, with a supervisor who will explore with you the possibilities of counselling. Although there is a fee for each subsequent counselling session, this is negotiable at assessment. No-one will be turned away from the service due to inability to pay.
Counselling and the Social Model of Disability
The counselling service within the Federation of Disabled people offers up to 24 week contracts within a Humanistic Intergrative Model
All counsellors at the Federation of Disabled People are qualified or in their final year of training and share a fundamental philosophy with the Social Model of Disability, i.e. that if the societal and environmental needs of the individual are met then a more rewarding and fulfilling life is experienced.
Each individual client is viewed as a whole person, not a 'condition' and as the person best qualified on how the societal and environmental barriers impact on their lives and those of their families (to whom the service also offers counselling if requested).
Through the safety of the therapeutic relationship, clients are encouraged to explore their individual needs and experience to develop a deeper understanding and awareness of empowerment and choice.
The counselling service also serves as a gateway to the wider organisational services offered by the Federation of Disabled people.
