the council's plans to redevelop Madeira drive
I read a report in last week's Argus that the council intend to redevelop part of Madeira drive next to the Sea life Centre. I read that they intend to take away the ramp that leads up to the amusement arcades and terrace and replace this with a lift! knowing first-hand how unreliable lifts are; especially outdoor lifts; especially outdoor lifts that are exposed to the sea, i can't understand why this is happening. Did the council consult any disabled people or organisations of disabled people when they made this decision? I doubt it.

application BH2010/00329
extracts from application BH2010/00329
address: Unit 5 The Terraces Madeira Drive Brighton description: New facades to South and East elevations, demolition of existing disabled ramp to allow for extension of existing terrace incorporating disabled lift and storage under, demolition of glass pavilion and installation of decking over vacant space. Refurbishment of 1920's pavilion including new doors and alterations to the layout to create new service access. At present the upper terrace is largely unusable due to the very large disabled access ramp (which is not compliant with current regulations) and the 1990s glass pavilion which stands empty and has never been put to use. By demolishing the glass pavilion, and filling in the ramp, the terrace will be cleared and extended and brought back into active use, providing amenity and enjoyment for users of Units 5 and 6. Neighbour and Community Consultation did not include any mention of disability groups. |
